It's true that speaking interviews happen on the spur of the moment. However, all exam takers are nervous and have little time to prepare their responses. Examiners are used to this, so they don't expect you to deliver a speech like a politician. They don't even ask you to provide well-structured and reasonable responses! However, following these basic IELTS Speaking tips and tactics will help you improve your score. We've compiled a list of the top 10 IELTS Speaking recommendations to help you improve your score:

1. Be fluent and liberated

Speak naturally and fluently. You'll get extra points as a result. It's less necessary to be brilliant with your language than it is to be fluent. However, don't speak too quickly and pay attention to your grammar. You should strike a "good balance" between speaking swiftly and pauses that are too long.

2. Practice answering sample questions

Typically, you will be asked about employment, studies, sports, family, and other common themes. So, before the exam, practice answering IELTS Speaking questions. You'll be shocked at how easy they are to make! All you need to do is master the right terminology and know what you're going to say.

3. Ask the question again if you need to

If you need something clarified, don't be afraid to ask. You will not be penalized for asking the examiner.

4. Be emotional!

Emotions should be expressed. The tone of a speaker's speech is what distinguishes an experienced speaker from a novice. Express yourself as if you were speaking in your own tongue.

5. Extend your speech

At the very least, try to speak more than the examiner. If a question is asked in a single sentence, react with two or more sentences. And never, ever, ever give terse, uncommunicative responses:

Examiner: Do you do any sport?

You: No, I don't like sports... [Don't stop there!] I'm not a very active person and I've never liked physical education in school. But I like playing intellectual games instead. For example, I find chess very interesting.

6. Be coherent

Make use of connecting words and structures. However, nevertheless, all in all, and moreover will add to the richness of your speech.

7. Give yourself time to think

If you're not sure how to respond to a question, use this strategy to allow yourself a little more time to consider your options. To begin, you can say something like, "It's a tough subject...", "I've never thought about that...", or "That's a fascinating question..." You'll have more time to think about your response this way.

You might alternatively rephrase the question as follows:

Examiner: What was your favorite book when you were a kid?

You: What book did I like as a child? Let me see...

8. Have you made a blunder? Don't be alarmed!

Don't be alarmed if you make a mistake. Attempt to make the correction as smooth as possible. And if you can't, just keep speaking; a few blunders won't cost you too many points.

9. Make an excellent first impression

It's important to look nice, smell good, and feel well. Have faith in yourself. Although it may not appear to be significant, a positive first impression can go a long way.

10. Answers should not be memorized

Examiners can tell if you spoke freely or if you memorized the response before the interview. It's not a good idea to learn entire scripts. Instead, learn individual words and collocations and incorporate them into your speech.
