What is IELTS?

IELTS is an abbreviation which stands for International English Language Testing System. It is an English test which is basically designed for testing the English of non-native speakers for getting visas and work permits and study permits to English speaking countries such as Canada, Australia, United States, New Zealand, UK, Ireland and a few others. What is the purpose of taking the IELTS test?

The basic purpose of taking the IELTS test is to demonstrate one’s ability in English language. The result of this standardized English test is utilized by many immigration and visa authorities along with universities and colleges in the English speaking countries for evaluating your candidature. What are the different types of IELTS tests?

IELTS test are of two types based on the purpose these are taken for. For admission to universities and for study permit purpose, it is IELTS Academic test and for the purpose of visa, US work permits, permanent residence and a few other purposes, one has to take IELTS General test. There is another variant of IELTS called UKVI IELTS test which is taken for admission into to United Kingdom. What is the structure and duration of IELTS test?

IELTS test is divided into four sections viz. Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. These sections are also called nodules sometimes. While the Listening and Speaking modules are same in both the versions of the test, that is IELTS Academic and IELTS General, Reading and Writing sections differ in these two different forms of IELTS tests.

How is IELTS scored?

IELTS gives you various types of questions on the 4 test modules. These questions are them scored against the correct answers and the answers are presented through a nine band scale. So if you have 100% correct answers your band will be 9 whereas if you have zero correct answers your band will be zero. Achieving a 9 band means an expert user of English language who has full command over language usage. Band 8 denotes that the user has very good English language skills, band 7 denotes good command over English language and band 6 denotes an average ability in English. Scoring below band 6 is of no use and the test has to be invariably repeated.
